• Provide psychological services to residents in Dallas area nursing homes.

• Services include psychological assessment, family/staff consultation and education, and individual psychotherapy.

• Treatment population includes residents in long-term care facilities suffering from depression, anxiety, adjustment problems, dementia, psychosis, chronic pain, and maladaptive health behaviors interfering with rehabilitation and/or maintenance of physical health.

 

May 1999 – August 2002: Clinical Internship Southwestern Psychotherapy Referral Service, University Of Texas Southwestern Medical Center At Dallas

• Provided short- and long-term individual outpatient psychotherapy, crisis intervention, and psychological and neuropsychological assessment.

 

August 2001 – August 2002: Clinical Internship Community Oriented Primary Care – A Division Of Parkland Health And Hospital Systems

• Provided psychotherapy (brief and longer-term) to adult patients referred by their primary care physician for various psychological issues, including depression, anxiety, chronic pain, and compliance concerns.

• Participated in consultation and collaboration with health and mental health professionals, including primary care physicians, psychiatrists, nurses, and social workers.

• Developed and facilitated psychoeducational and supportive groups, on various topics related to chronic health conditions, including chronic pain and obesity/weight management.

• Provided crisis intervention for individuals in psychiatric emergency.

 

August 2000 – August 2001: Clinical Internship Garland Independent School District

• Conducted clinical assessments to evaluate children and adolescents for “emotional disturbance,” as defined by the Texas Education Agency.

• Provided consultation regarding assessments and behavioral interventions to teachers, school counselors, and diagnosticians.

• Provided parents with feedback regarding test results, in both one-on-one settings, as well as part of regular A.R.D. meetings.

• Provided behavior strategy consultations, including recommendations for teachers in dealing with problem behaviors in the classroom.

• Assisted in functional assessments of children with autism.

 

May 1999 – June 2001: Clinical Internship Parkland Memorial Hospital Psychiatric Emergency Room

• Conducted psychological intake evaluations and crisis interventions for individuals in psychiatric emergency.

• Formulated treatment planning, collaborating with physicians and psychiatrists regarding patient assessment and disposition.

 

May 1999 – August 2000: Clinical Practicum Terrell State Hospital

• Adult Acute Unit (March 2000 – August 2000): Conducted psychological assessments of adult patients and participated in multidisciplinary staffings, case conferences, and treatment planning. Also provided consultation to psychiatrists and facilitated individual and group psychotherapy.

• Neuropsychology Consultation Service (October 1999 – March 2000): Conducted neuropsychological assessments of adult patients, including those with Alzheimer’s Dementia, Parkinson’s Disease, Epilepsy, head trauma, and Dementia (due to HIV and substance abuse).

• Geriatrics Unit (June 1999): Conducted daily rounds, participated in group experiences, provided consultation to ward psychiatrist, attended multidisciplinary staffings and case conferences, and assisted in the formulation of treatment planning.

• Forensics Unit (May 1999 – October 1999): Conducted psychological assessments and competency evaluations of adult patients, attended multidisciplinary staffings and case conferences, formulated treatment planning, provided consultation to ward psychiatrist, and facilitated individual and group psychotherapy. • Conducted dissertation project: Impact of Anti-Inflammatory Medications, Methotrexate, and Steroidal Medications on Psychosocial Functioning and Medical Status in Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis Patients.

• Awarded the Dallas Psychological Association’s “Dissertation of the Year” award (2003).

• Conducted thesis project on Hispanic female juvenile offenders: Factors of Hispanic Female Offenders.

• Conducted research through Parkland’s Community Oriented Primary Care psychology division. Project topics included: 1) research on and drafts of patient education materials about depression, anxiety, and substance abuse; 2) study of primary care physicians’ methods of patient referral to psychologists; 3) testing of hypotheses regarding the cause of patients’ failures to keep initial appointments with psychologists; 4) research on patients presenting to primary care clinics with physical complaints and underlying Axis I disorders.
